40 Before 40: Introduction

A while back, I set 40 goals to complete before I turn 40. I was going to make videos about them. I even wrote out a script. I bought myself a tripod.

Then I put off filming the videos. I put it off again. And today I realized: I don’t really want to create videos. I love watching videos, and I’ve made videos before, but they aren’t my favorite form of creation. My favorite thing is writing.

So why not just complete this project as a series of blog posts? Maybe I won’t get that many views, but then the project will actually get done. I have a lot going on in my life right now, and spending hours and hours in a project with, honestly, little payoff isn’t a good use of my time. I’m taking the easy route because sometimes the easy way is the best way.

If you are creative, you have way more ideas for projects than can possibly get done. A lot of them are really good ideas that you just have to put away.

I doubt I’ll ever create the philosophy-sketch-comedy-social-media account that I thought of. I even had tons of ideas for posts. But I’m happier if I stay away from social media anyway. I won’t write all the novels that I have ideas for. Some ideas I just forget about.

Right now, I’m not overly busy, but I’m also trying to slow down in life. I’m trying to take my time with things. Enjoy moments. And that means that resisting the urge to fill up every second with being productive.

On the bus yesterday, I sat and looked out the window for a while (and then fell asleep). I want to live a life that allows me to do that.

Back to the main point: I have 40 goals that I’m trying to complete before I’m 40. I’ve already done quite a lot of them. And some of them I’ve switched out and changed.

I’ll be posting here a few times a month (except in the summer) about what I’ve done. Feel free to follow along.
